Pre-Filled GST Returns Are Here: No More Sleepless Nights for Accountants!

Published 26 Jul 2025. GST rules change often; check the latest position or ask us before acting on it.

The revolution of GSTR-3B returns is coming in January 2025. Here's why you should be excited, or at least slightly less stressed.

Have you ever sat at your desk, staring at the clock, knowing your GSTR-3B is due, while your GSTR-2B and purchase register refuse to reconcile? Filing monthly GST returns can be a stressful maze of numbers and checks.

Here is some good news that makes the compliance journey a little easier. GSTN is rolling out pre-filled GSTR-3B returns.

What's the deal with pre-filled GSTR-3B?

Your output tax liability will be populated from your GSTR-1, and your input tax credit (ITC) will be pulled in from your GSTR-2B. The return comes to you ready and waiting for approval.

  • Output tax liability: auto-populated from your GSTR-1. Filed your GSTR-1? The numbers are already waiting in your 3B.
  • Input tax credit: pre-filled from GSTR-2B, using data from suppliers who filed their GSTR-1. No more manual calculation of eligible credit.

Most of the tedious work is already done. Check, approve and file.

Made a mistake in GSTR-1? Meet GSTR-1A

Submitted your GSTR-1 and then realised you forgot an invoice? File the amendment through GSTR-1A, and your output tax liability adjusts accordingly in GSTR-3B.

IMS: your new GST concierge

The Invoice Management System (IMS) helps you handle supplier invoices. When your supplier files GSTR-1, the invoices appear in your IMS, and you can:

  • Accept: you recognise the invoice and want the ITC.
  • Reject: the invoice doesn't belong to you.
  • Hold: you're not sure yet and will deal with it next month.

Accepted invoices show up in your GSTR-2B, and your ITC follows.

When is this coming?

January 2025. The hard-lock system will kick in then, raising compliance levels. Until then, it's a good idea to get familiar with the system.

Why this matters

For business owners, fewer compliance headaches and more time to grow the business. For accountants, less reconciliation at midnight. Most importantly, it helps you avoid costly errors that lead to penalties.

The key takeaway

Pre-filled GSTR-3B takes much of the stress and guesswork out of monthly filing. Get on board with the system early.

P.S. Pre-filled doesn't mean unchecked. You still need to make sure everything is in order, but reconciliation gets far easier.
